The territorial Police at Old Kampala has in custody a suspect identified as Sulaiman Mkanda for allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle registration number UFL 990Q.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan says that the suspect was arrested on the 19th April, 2022 at about midnight at Namungona Zone.
According to Owoyesigyire, on the fateful night, Mkada while being ridden on a different motocycle by a rider only identified as Aine, stopped an oncoming motorcycle registration number UFL 990Q, pulled out a Fake Police Warrant card reading D/AIP Byaruhanga Sulaiman to prove to the rider that he was a Police officer and begun questioning him why he was riding very fast.
The rider of the stopped Boda Boda, Bukenya Abdul was shaken and allowed the suspect (Sulaiman) to remove the ignition Key.
As luck would have it, Bukenya’s Boda Boda was rescued from his robber when a police patrol led by Oc Namungona made a sudden aarrival in a process of questioning Bukenya.
On seeing police patrol vehicle, the suspect threw away the warrant card and the ignition key before he could take off.
However, the patrollers pursued and arrested him after a serious struggle.
He was taken to Old Kampala Police station where he is currently being held.
Police says that they have preferred charges of impersonation and theft of a Motorcycle on the suspect.
” Relevant statements have been recorded and the suspect will be arraigned in courts of law as soon as Possible.” Owoyesigyire said
Police says that they have recorded many cases where riders complain that suspects impersonating as police officers in plain uniforms have impounded their Boda Bodas
“We are also looking into other many allegations where victims have come out to allege that officers not in uniform have previously disappeared with their Motorcycles upon impounding them”, police noted
They said that investigation into the allegations are ongoing.
