Police have arrested two suspects in connection with alleged child trafficking.
The suspects are Niyebare Kalorine and Ashaba Dina, whose whereabouts are yet to establish.
The duo was arrested on Saturday (April15) after they were sighted at Nkoowr-Mende Boda Boda Stage in Nkoowe zone, Kaliti parish, Wakiso with 17 minors with their luggage which aroused suspicions.
The police from Wakiso was notified and responded immediately to the scene. Seventeen young children aged between 1yr and 6yrs were rescued and their luggage.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police said victims did not speak any other language except English.
¶The children also did not know where they came from,¶ said Owoyesigyire. “They were found to be in bad condition with bruises and wounds all over the body especially on the buttocks, arousing suspicions of child torture.”
Upon interrogations, one of the suspects (Dina) reported that the children were being taken to Mbarara district. She however, failed to provide any more useful information, feigning ignorance of the language.
The suspects were later arrested and are currently detained at Wakiso police station on charges of child trafficking.
Owoyesigyire said investigation, and other inquiries into the matter are ongoing noting that the privacy and safety of the children are being protected for purposes of investigations and protectiolng their rights.
