The Member of Parliament for Makindye Ssabagabo municipality in Wakiso district, Hon. Dr. David Sserukenya alias the Ssabagabonian, Taata Ssabagabo (NUP) has challenged Ugandans to stop sympathizing with the victims of disasters and other unprepared happenings but to show them possible and true empathy.
The legislator made the remarks during his courtesy visit to the victims of Lubigi wetland evictions whose houses, cultivation farms were recently demolished by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) over alleged illegal encroachment.
“I call upon Ugandans to stop sympathizing with victims and show empathy,” Sserukenya urged.
During the visit, Hon. Sserukenya extended medical care services to the victims and donated to them food items, temporary shelters among other humanitarian services.
“I have managed to visit Rubigi evicted victims and I took for them tents, posho, soap and medication like anti malarials antibiotics, anti hypertensives, tabs for deworming , flue and cough,” he added.
According to the legislator, at least 80% of the victims have developed high blood pressure. He said he would be going back to monitor their Bp before he declares them hypertensives.
Over 1,000 people were left homeless as NEMA intensified its operations to crackdown alleged encroachers on Lubigi wetland in Nansana West II, Wakiso district. These are accusing government inflicting psychological torture to them calling for the president’s intervention in to their matter.
The eviction of Lubigi residents has attracted many voices of prominent religious and traditional leaders, opposition politicians, human rights defenders demanding the government to compensate the victims. However, the government is still defending its actions citing the need to improve the areas infrastructure and remove the old ones.
