Dairy farming experts emphasize the critical role of proper calf management in ensuring the long-term health and productivity of dairy herds. According to Joan Atukunda, a seasoned dairy farming expert, the first three months of a calf’s life are pivotal for rumen and udder development.
The 5 C’s of Calf Care
Atukunda outlined the 5 C’s of calf care as essential for dairy farmers to master:
Colostrum: Crucial within the first 24 hours of life, colostrum provides essential antibodies from the mother to calves born with low immunity. Farmers must ensure calves consume as much colostrum as possible, as the calf’s stomach pores that allow absorption of antibodies to the blood stream close after 24 hours.
Calories: Calves require adequate energy for growth and development. Farmers should provide milk equivalent to 10% of birth weight. From day 7, introduce leafy hay and concentrates (calf pellets or maize bran) available on market.
Consistency: Consistent feeding and care routines prevent complications like calf scours.
Cleanliness: Handle calves with hygiene in mind, ensuring clean maternity paddocks, disinfected calf pens clean milk and water containers and sanitized beddings.
Comfort: Provide well-ventilated calf pens to reduce pneumonia risk dry, comfortable beddings to prevent bacterial growth and regular bedding changes.
“Mastering the 5 C’s of calf care lays the groundwork for successful calf management,” Atukunda emphasized. “Dairy farmers must prioritize these essential elements to ensure their calves receive the best possible start in life.” she added.
Proper calf care has numerous benefits, including: Improved calf survival rates, enhanced growth and development, increased milk production in adulthood, reduced disease susceptibility among others.
By focusing on the 5 C’s of calf care, dairy farmers can set their herds up for long-term success. As Atukunda noted, “Investing in proper calf care is investing in the future of your dairy farm.”
