The son of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi who vanished six years ago has reappeared and announced his intentions to re-enter politics.
Saif al-islam Gaddafi,in his first public remarks since he was sentenced to death by a Libyan court in 2015,the 49_ year old claimed he would command widespread support from the former supporters of his father and many more others who believe in democracy and rule. Of law.
In an interview with the New York Times,Saif noted that”It’s not in their interest to have a strong government and that’s why they are afraid of elections.”
“They are against the idea of a president,a state and a government that has legitimacy derived from people. I’m leading my father’s Green movement.”He added.
He also defended his father’s record in power and refused to apologise for all the atrocities committed by his regime.”What happened to Libya was not a revolution but a civil war.” He noted.
The second son of the longest serving president is well educated at the University of Tripoli ,Vienna and later a PhD at the London school of Economics.
He was captured in southern Libya after his father’s regime collapsed,and imprisoned in the city of Zintan .He was declared guilty after investigations by the high court in Libya and sentenced to death but refused to hand him over the International Criminal Court which up to now wants him to face trial.
It was reported that he had been released but he never appeared in public and romours in Libya have it that he is planning a political come back though he refused to respond to such allegations of his plans to participate in the December elections.
