KANUNGU

June 20, 2025 — In a vibrant celebration of the power of conservation and community, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) yesterday disbursed UGX 2.2 billion to local communities surrounding Bwindi-Mgahinga Conservation Area. The initiative, fueled by tourism revenue, is set to bolster vital sectors including education, healthcare, access to clean water, and sustainable livelihoods.

The event, hosted at Buhoma Visitor Information Centre in Kanungu District, was presided over by Prof. James Kalema, Chairman of the UWA Board of Trustees, representing Hon. Tom Butime, Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities.

“Conservation thrives when communities thrive,” said Prof. Kalema, emphasizing the interdependence between protecting Uganda’s natural heritage and uplifting the people who live closest to it.

The funds were allocated as follows:Kanungu District: UGX 1,175,006,492,Kisoro District: UGX 636,120,504 and Rubanda District: UGX 386,432,622.

These contributions stem from tourism activities in and around Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, globally recognized for their biodiversity and as sanctuaries for the endangered mountain gorilla. The revenue-sharing program ensures that communities are direct beneficiaries of conservation success.

Local leaders and community members expressed optimism that the disbursements will lead to tangible improvements in public services and further strengthen community-led conservation efforts.

As Uganda continues to position itself as a premier eco-tourism destination, initiatives like this reaffirm the nation’s commitment to inclusive development, proving that when wildlife flourishes, so too can the people.
