The National Association of Broadcasters has re-elected Next Media founder Kin Kariisa and Galaxy FM CEO, Dr. Innocent Nahabwe as the association’s Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively.
The election exercise was held on Thursday during the Association’s Annual General Meeting that took place at Hotel Africana.
During the AGM, members of the NAB raised red flags to the Uganda Communication Commission against what they called exhorbitant charges to members whenever applying for licences and other services.
“UCC is a government agency whose operations are funded by the National budget through the taxes we pay. So, why they charge members exhorbitantly as if they are a business entity?” questioned Capt. Francis Babu, CEO Metro FM.
Captain Babu added that charging members licencensing fees is double charging sisnce they pay taxes that are later passed on to UCC to fund the commission activities.
Speaking at the function, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the minister of ICT and National Guidance, disclosed that government was working with other stakeholders to have the media tribunal constituted.
He further said that government is discussing on the proposal by NAB to be considered in the national budget and will give its response as soon as decision is made.
