Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is celebrating its first 100 days since officially taking over electricity distribution services from Umeme. The company says the change marks a new beginning for Uganda’s power sector, focusing on better service, lower electricity prices, and stronger public management.

UEDCL focused on Managing skilled staff, Improving company finances, Better customer service and Making electricity more available across the country “We started with a plan to build a strong team, stabilize our finances, serve customers better, and increase electricity supply. I am proud to say we have made progress in all areas,” said Paul Mwesigwa.

Paul Mwesigwa reported that energy purchases have increased by 6% with Electricity prices dropping by 14%, saving Ugandans over UGX 250 billion. The company is working on over 410,000 new electricity connections by the end of the year.

Despite the progress, Minister Ruth Nankabirwa warned of serious problems, including vandalism of electricity infrastructure and theft of power.“People are stealing electricity even in broad daylight. This is a danger to the public and slows down development,” she said.

The company has started, replacing damaged transformers, repairing broken substations and scheduling regular upgrades to improve power reliability. Also 17 suspects of electricity theft are already facing court legal procedures. Hon Ruth Nankabirwa called upon all the RDCs and DPCs to be vigilant in their areas and report people who steal electricity.UEDCL says it is focused on building a transparent, affordable, and sustainable public power service, in line with the government’s second-generation electricity reforms.

“The Big Switch is not just a change in companies. It is a complete transformation of how we deliver electricity in Uganda,” said Mwesigwa.
