In a statement released on Sunday 20th.July 2025 by UJA Secretary General Emmanuel Kirunda, the association described the journalists’ detention as a serious violation of press freedom and called for their immediate and unconditional release.

The two reporters were reportedly arrested on Saturday morning from Mukono and transported to Kampala by individuals who only identified themselves as members of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU).They were arrested in connection to the story that was written about the education officer for mukono municipal council.

The ongoing detention of these journalists is a serious concern to us, as it poses an adverse effect on the state of press freedom in this country,” Kirunda said in a statement released today.

“UJA has instructed its legal team to explore all possible legal avenues to secure the release of the journalists and ensure their rights are protected”. Kirunda added.

No formal charges had been communicated to the public regarding the journalists’ detention at the time of publishing this story.
