The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has called for every registered sports team in the country to have a professional doctor or physician on staff to prevent health complications among players.
This recommendation follows the tragic incident on November 1st, when the assistant referee, Peter Kabugo collapsed on the pitch and was later pronounced dead.
Speaking to the President of the UMA Dr. Herbert Luswata, he emphasizes the importance of sports physicians in ensuring player safety and highlighted that having a dedicated doctor helps in early detection of health issues among players, who may be at risk due to factors such as drug use, mental health struggles, or physical stress.
Dr. Luswata stated that overworked players are at greater risk of complications and recommended that physicians advise players on timely retirement from active sports to avoid severe health risks.
