A United Nations (UN) helicopter has been shot in North Kivu, Eastern DRC
The incident happened in Rusayo, Nyiragongo territory on Sunday.
“A helicopter of MONUSCO (UN Peacekeeping Mission in DRC) which took off from Beni this Sunday at the beginning of the afternoon bound for Goma came under fire which resulted in the death of one of the crew members and seriously injured another Blue Helmet,” read a statement by MONUSCO in parts.
MONUSCO further noted that the aircraft landed safely in Goma.
It has been reported that the helicopter was shot by the rebels killing a yet to identify UN Peacekeeper.
MONUSCO has strongly condemned the cowardly attack against the aircraft bearing UN emblem.
This is a second plane to be shot at near Goma. Less than a fortnight ago, Rwanda Defense Forces allegedly fired at a DRC fighter jet as it descended at Goma International Airport.
According to the UN, an attack on the Blue Helmet may attract a war crime against the rebels.
However, no official statement has been made by the M23 rebels or any rebel groups operating in the DRC claiming the shooting
