MBARARA
Death inquiry has been launched following the recovery of an unidentified male body from River Rwizi on the evening of July 10, 2025. The discovery was made near Nyamitanga Bridge in Kasanyaraze cell, Kakoba ward, drawing swift response from residents and police.
According to a statement issued by SP Kasasira Samson, PRO Rwizi, concerned citizens noticed the body floating at approximately 6:30 PM and alerted authorities at Mbarara Central Police Station. Officers arrived promptly at the scene and retrieved the body, which was then transported to the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Police have opened a death inquiry file and are treating the incident as a suspected drowning. However, investigations remain ongoing to establish the cause of death and the identity of the deceased.
Authorities have urged members of the public who may have missing relatives to contact CPS Mbarara for identification assistance. The police are also appealing for any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward.
The discovery has sent ripples of concern through the local community, raising questions about safety and surveillance along the riverbanks.
SP Kasasira emphasized the importance of cooperation, saying, “We call upon the public to assist in identifying the deceased so we can notify next of kin and bring clarity to this tragic occurrence.”
River Rwizi, known for its ecological and cultural significance, has previously been the site of occasional accidents. The current investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this incident.
