At the time when climate change issues are threating the entire globle, the opposition Uganda People’s Congress -UPC has advised government on preserving the environment.
Sharon Oyat Arach, the party spokesperson says that degrading the environment affects country’s food security, local economies and livelihoods. She urges government to to restore water catchment areas across the country to minimize on the effects of climate change caused by man made activities.
First forward, UPC appreciates the initiative taken by the parliamentary committee on Environment and Natural Resources to suspend companies engaged in sand mining in Lwera wetlands.
It should be recalled that the committee recently suspended with three companies engaged in sand mining in Lwera swamp lands along Kampala-Masaka highway in intervention to saving the wetland.
“This should be an eye opener for the government and NEMA that all is not going on well with our environment and its necessary to protect it.” Arach said
The suspended companies are KPL, Seroma Ltd and Double Q. These have been suspended with immediate effect.
However, UPC suggests that the focus should be put beyond Lwera wetlands and extended to degraded wetlands to save the entire country from environment degredation.
