Following the recent UCU student death saga at Makerere University guild presidential campaigns, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has blamed the incident on militarization of politics in public universities.
“We condemn the increasing violence being demonstrated in public universities as result of militarizing the student elections which resulted into loss of life, property and injury of students,” UPC condemns
This was during the party’s weekly press briefing at Uganda House on Wednesday.
Sharon Arach Oyat, the party spokesperson asked government and universities to set up laws that regulate student’s elections to avoid acts of violence in institutions.
She further urged insitutions of learning to learn from the discipline exhbited by the UPC candidate at the recently suspended Makerere University guild presidential elections, Brian Ndibarema than engaging in violent political activies
In related news, Ayat appeals to electorates in Soroti East county to vote for the UPC candidates; Pascal Amuriat and Engwenyu Franco Obongonyinge for the position of Member of Parliament and City Division Councilor for Soroti East respectively.
She demanded the EC to ensure a peaceful free and fair by election in Soroti East
“As UPC we calls for peaceful campaigns and tolerance of all political players involved and the Independent Electoral commission is encouraged to conduct free, fair and transparent elections.”
