Government has been asked to prioritize the interests of Ugandans and ensure effective service delivery if it is to realize it’s goal for a secure Uganda.
Sharon Oyat Arach, the UPC spokesperson says it is wrong for a the government to boast of a secure country when many people are impoverishing to poverty due to poor social service delivery and unfair taxes. She says there is a need for the country to refocus and place interests of Ugandans at heart by putting in place conducive environment that facilitates equal access to opportunities and other services.
“A secure Uganda cannot be a reality when our people are limping in poverty, the social welfare programs like Emyooga and Operation Wealth Creation among others have failed […] As a country, we need to to refocus and place interests of Ugandans at heart. Facilitate effectively and establish more schools and hospitals as well as ensuring equal access to opportunities. That is when a secure Uganda can be a reality as opposed to what is at hand today,” Arach said.
She was responding to the government’s proposed theme for the commemoration of the 35th National Heroes Day due on June 9, at Mpenja CoU Primary School playground in Mpenja sub-county, Gomba district.
UPC further noted that government still has a long way to go to achieve a prosperous future for it’s citizens. They challenged the government to address modern-day challenges such as massive youth unemployment, poor road network, promote agro-processing industry, modify the education system to focus on job creation inorder to achieve its goal for a secure Uganda.
“We need to come together and work for a common cause and promote the interest of our people. This is when we shall proudly achieve the key objectives of our theme for the Heroes Day that implores us to hail our heroes; a secure Uganda is now a reality,” Arach noted.
Government commemorates Heroes’ Day every June 9th, in memory of the first NRM/A heroes executed in Kikandwa, Luweero by the UNLA in 1981. The area played a pivotal role in the five-year guerrilla war that brought President Museveni to power in January, 1986 a position he has held until this day.
