The Ntungamo Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Magistrate Nassuna Sharon, has charged two teachers from Standard College with assault, following a widely-shared video depicting their violent behavior towards a student. The accused, Aneb Mwesigye (31) and Naboth Twesigye (30), have pleaded not guilty and are currently remanded until their next court appearance on March 4, 2025.
Representing the prosecution, Ntungamo State Attorney Marriam Nambusi confirmed that investigations have concluded, allowing the trial to proceed as scheduled. The charges stem from an incident in which the teachers were seen assaulting Akampa Brian, a senior two student, for leaving school grounds without permission.
The video, which sparked outrage across social media, shows the student being beaten mercilessly despite his pleas for forgiveness. He attempted to escape but was forcibly brought back to endure more punishment.
Maureen Atuhaire, Commissioner of the Child and Family Protection Department at the Uganda Police Force, disclosed that they have done thorough investigations to hold the suspects accountable and waiting for Court’s decision.
Atuhaire condemned the teachers’ actions, labeling them a gross violation of children’s rights. She highlighted that corporal punishment is strictly prohibited under Section 106A of the Children Act (Amended), 2016.
