Wendi Mobile Wallet, a payment platform developed by PostBank, has facilitated the disbursement of UGX 520 billion to 10,589 Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) across Uganda. This marks a major milestone in the country’s efforts to promote financial inclusion, particularly under the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM).
According to George Kiyingi, Head of Agent Banking and Fintech Distribution at Wendi, the partnership with PDM has played a crucial role in streamlining access to financial services for rural communities.
“By aligning with the PDM, Wendi has helped disburse UGX 580 billion directly to SACCOs in over 150 districts. This has fueled household-level investments and revitalized small businesses nationwide,” Kiyingi said.
With more than one million active users, Wendi has simplified transactions, savings, and withdrawals, making financial services more accessible to traders and farmers. The platform also offers a competitive 10% interest rate on savings, encouraging a strong saving culture among Ugandans.
President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the importance of PDM in wealth creation, stating that each parish is expected to accumulate UGX 800 million in parish banks over five years. He noted that beneficiaries must repay funds within three years to ensure sustainability.
Edward Katende, PDM Coordinator at Operation Wealth Creation, commended Wendi for bringing banking services closer to the people.
“Wendi is putting banking into the hands of households without requiring them to travel long distances,” Katende said.
Since the launch of PDM, Uganda has been working to transition millions from the subsistence economy to commercial activity. Wendi’s mobile banking platform is bridging this gap by enabling financial transactions via mobile phones.
In Bukedea District, Commercial Officer Moses Godfrey Otim highlighted the impact, saying,
“In just 3-4 months, we disbursed UGX 16.2 billion to 16,725 people, many of whom had never used formal banking services before.”
Community leaders also praised the initiative. Kisiramu Twalib, Chairman of Bugonza LC in Kaliro District, noted that families no longer have to travel long distances or wait in long queues for financial services. However, he and other residents urged users to protect their mobile banking details to prevent fraud.
With over 6,000 active agents across Uganda, Wendi remains committed to supporting government programs and grassroots financial inclusion efforts.
