The Directorate of CID on Tuesday August 1 charged to court, Asiimwe Febby, the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) official for Kole district over abuse of office related charges.
The suspect according to police in 2001 allegedly moved the registration kit from Kole district to Kampala without authorisation and used it to register people, outside his jurisdiction contrary to NIRA procedures and guidelines.
Police says that the kit was used to register both Ugandan and Foreign Nationals, most of whom, presented forged documents at the time of registration.
Police further alleges that some of the registered persons were registered during late hours of the night which contravenes with NIRA guidelines.
SCP Fred Enanga, police spokesperson says the wrongful act does not only result into an abuse of office but also crimes such as terrorism, money laundering and trafficking in persons.
Asiimwe is scheduled to appear before the Anti-corruption division at Kololo, for Abuse of Office contrary to section 11(1) of the Anti-corruption Act, as amended.
The police mouthpiece expressed commitment to work with Law Enforcement Partners, to hold accountable anyone found manipulating the National Identification System.
“In this very aspect, the officer violated the Oath he took to serve and protect, and unlawfully register persons, outside his jurisdiction, whom he was not authorized to register,” Enanga said
“The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Internal Affairs, is committed to protecting the integrity of the National Identity Documents issued by NIRA,” he added
