In a break from long-standing tradition, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States today without placing his hand on a Bible while taking the oath of office. Instead, First Lady Melania Trump held two Bibles—the Lincoln Bible and a family Bible gifted to Trump by his late mother—beside him during the ceremony.

President Trump raised his right hand, as required by the Constitution, but kept his left hand by his side, diverging from the customary practice of resting it on a religious text. The move has sparked widespread discussion, with many noting that while it was unconventional, it remains constitutional.

The U.S. Constitution does not mandate the use of a Bible or any religious text during the swearing-in of a president. Article II, Section 1 only requires the president to take the oath of office, with no stipulation on how it is administered. The tradition of using a Bible began with George Washington in 1789, but not all presidents have followed it. John Quincy Adams used a book of law in 1825, and Theodore Roosevelt did not use any book when he was sworn in following the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901.

The decision has fueled speculation about Trump’s motivations. While the president has not addressed the matter directly, some political analysts suggest that it aligns with his history of eschewing presidential norms. Others believe it may reflect his approach to symbolism, emphasizing the role of personal conviction over ceremony.

Supporters of President Trump hailed the moment as a demonstration of his independence and willingness to challenge established traditions. Critics, however, questioned whether it signaled a deeper shift in the tone and approach of his administration.

The inauguration ceremony, held on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, drew a sizable crowd, including lawmakers, dignitaries, and international guests. In his inaugural address, Trump pledged to “restore America’s greatness,” a central theme of his campaign.

As the nation embarks on this new chapter, the symbolism of today’s events will undoubtedly continue to be a topic of conversation. Whether viewed as a bold statement or a needless departure from tradition, Trump’s decision has once again captured the world’s attention, setting the tone for his presidency.
