OPINION
Last week, we took a big step toward a dream I’ve been carrying for years: establishing a dedicated organization to ensure that women’s voices are heard and included in decision-making.

While many celebrated this milestone with us, and we are grateful for the encouragement. A few colleagues, however, reached out privately and asked why I felt it was still necessary to build a whole organization around this cause, given that government programs, projects, and campaigns already exist to promote women’s empowerment and participation.

When Abandonment Becomes: the silent suffering of young mothers in uganda

The truth is, while women’s rights have been partially addressed, we are still not there. Across the world, and particularly in Uganda, women make up half of the population, yet their voices remain underrepresented in leadership, policymaking, media, and storytelling. Too often, narratives are written about women, not by women. Decisions that shape women’s lives are made without their perspectives at the table. This doesn’t just silence women, it robs society of wisdom, empathy, and innovative solutions.

For generations, cultural, religious, and social norms have told women to remain quiet as a sign of respect and good upbringing. Today, digital harassment has added another layer of intimidation, making it even harder for women to express themselves. This has not only limited inclusion but also deprived communities of the benefit of diverse opinions.

Female voices bring perspectives forged by resilience, caregiving, survival, and innovation. When women speak, they shed light on issues that often go overlooked: maternal health, reproductive health, education access, gender-based violence, economic inequality, and the quiet yet powerful stories of everyday transformation. These voices don’t compete with men’s voices, they complete the picture of humanity.

This is why we created SheVoice (shevoiceug.org): to amplify women’s voices as an essential foundation for building a more equal and inclusive society. Through mentorship, storytelling, advocacy, and the recognition of women uplifting others, SheVoice is working to equip young girls with the confidence and skills to tell their stories and stand boldly in their truth, create safe spaces where women can share lived experiences without judgment, challenge stereotypes that silence women or limit their roles and inspire collective change by showing that women’s voices are powerful catalysts for progress.

At a time when inequality still lingers, in boardrooms, in parliaments, and in villages, it is not enough to acknowledge women’s struggles. We must listen directly to their dreams, challenges, and solutions. Women’s voices are not an afterthought; they are a necessity for real, lasting change.

By amplifying more female voices, we raise entire communities. And through platforms like SheVoice, we can ensure that no woman’s story goes unheard, and no girl grows up doubting the value of her voice.
