Police in Kira Division have arrested a woman accused of stealing a three-month-old baby boy from Kireka in Wakiso District after allegedly pretending to be pregnant.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Amongin Brenda, was arrested in Soroti District following a coordinated operation that led to the recovery of the child.
The incident occurred in Kireka D Cell, Kireka Ward, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality.
Police said Amongin had travelled from Kalaki District on May 4 and visited the home of her cousin, Akunyo Sarah. She reportedly told family members that she had come to Kampala to process her National Identity Card under the express service.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on May 5 at around 2pm, the baby’s mother briefly stepped outside the house, leaving the child asleep indoors. On returning, she reportedly found both the baby and the suspect missing.
“The suspect was later tracked and arrested in Soroti District, and the baby was safely recovered,” police said.
Investigators further established that the suspect had allegedly deceived her husband into believing she was pregnant. Police said she reportedly asked him for money on May 2, claiming she needed to travel to hospital for delivery.
Authorities believe the alleged abduction may have been part of an attempt to present the stolen child as her own baby.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged once investigations are completed.
Police said arrangements are underway to reunite the child with the family.
