Self-Care for Grassroots Women: A Quiet Act of Resistance and Survival

Across many societies today, divisions are deepening while poverty and inequality continue to persist. Communities are increasingly fragmented along economic, social, and cultural lines, making it harder to build trust and shared progress. Yet within this challenge lies one of the most powerful forces for change, young people.

In countries like Uganda, where the majority of the population is youthful, young people are not just waiting for opportunities; they are actively creating them. They are stepping forward as leaders, innovators, and connectors, addressing both social divisions and economic hardship in ways that are practical, inclusive, and transformative.

Youth-led initiatives are playing a critical role in strengthening social cohesion. Through community dialogues, peer engagement, and grassroots mobilization, young people are bringing individuals from different backgrounds together. They are creating spaces where differences can be discussed openly, where trust can be rebuilt, and where a sense of shared identity can emerge. In many communities, it is youth who are breaking down barriers of tribe, religion, and class, barriers that have long hindered unity.

At the same time, these efforts are not happening in isolation from economic realities. Poverty and inequality remain major drivers of exclusion, often fueling the very divisions that youth are trying to resolve. Recognizing this, many young people are going beyond social engagement to develop solutions that directly address economic challenges.

Through entrepreneurship and innovation, youth are creating jobs not only for themselves but also for others. Small businesses, digital platforms, and community-based enterprises are opening up new opportunities, especially in underserved areas. These initiatives are not just about income generation, they are about restoring dignity, reducing dependency, and giving people a stake in their communities.

Equally important is the role youth are playing in skills development. Many are leading training programs, mentorship initiatives, and knowledge-sharing platforms that equip their peers with practical skills. By doing so, they are helping to bridge the gap between education and employment, empowering others to break free from cycles of poverty.

What makes youth-led efforts particularly powerful is their ability to connect social cohesion with economic inclusion. When young people come together to work, create, and solve problems, they build relationships that go beyond economic transactions. They foster trust, mutual respect, and a shared vision for the future. In this way, economic empowerment becomes a tool for unity, and social cohesion becomes a foundation for sustainable development.

However, despite their potential, youth continue to face significant barriers. Limited access to funding, lack of institutional support, and high unemployment rates often constrain their efforts. Many promising initiatives struggle to grow or sustain impact due to these challenges. If these barriers are not addressed, the full potential of youth as drivers of change will remain untapped.

There is therefore a need for deliberate investment in youth-led solutions. Governments, institutions, and development partners must create enabling environments that support youth innovation, expand access to resources, and include young people in decision-making processes. Supporting youth is not simply a matter of empowerment, it is a strategic investment in the stability and prosperity of society as a whole.

Ultimately, the role of youth in building cohesive and equitable societies cannot be overstated. They are not just participants in development; they are shaping its direction. By bridging divides and addressing inequality at the same time, young people are laying the foundation for communities that are not only more united, but also more just.

If we are to build a future defined by inclusion, dignity, and shared opportunity, then youth must remain at the center of that vision.
