Uganda Red Cross has confirmed that a total of 14 people have died following a Car accident along Masaka – Mbarara bypass in Masaka City on Thursday morning.
“Great thanks to Kampala Traffic and Uganda Red Cross Cross teams that have responded to road traffic accident at Masaka – Kyabakuza road this morning involving commuter taxi and trailer. 14 dead and accorded dignified handling, referrals (number not confirmed),” reads a tweet on URC Twitter account.
The accident occurred at Kasijagirwa village near Gaz Petrol Station when a Trailer rammed into a moving commuter Taxi using many death and injuries.
On contrary, when contacted about this fatal incident,ASP Godfrey Mwesigye the southern region traffic police commander said 13 people had been confirmed dead.
Eyewitnesses says the accident occurred after a speeding bus from Mbarara whose reg no was not recorded overtook a trailer Registration. No. T433BDY/T877DWZ which was travelling from Kampala and in the process, the driver of the trailer lost control and rammed into an oncoming commuter taxi registration number UBC 995C.
Most of the victims were occupants of the commuter taxi which had 15 people aboard.
They include a driver of the commuter Taxi and others whose identities had not been established by the publication time.
Muhammad Nsubuga, the regional police spokesman said their rescue operations were underway to help the victims most of whom were not found with identification documents.
He added that they were yet to get details of the victims of the accident.
Some of the casualties according to Nsubuga sustained fractured legs and arms and are currently admitted at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
