At least one person has been buried alive and eleven others survived after a sand mine collapsed in Kiyovu village, Kacerere ward, Ryakarimira town council in Kabale district.
The deceased is Emmanuel Twishime, a Rwandan national and resident of Mariba village, Nyamiyaga parish, Rubaya Sub County, Gicumbi district in Rwanda.
He had together with eleven others still at large crossed from Rwanda side to Kiyovu village Uganda, through Kiyovu porous boarder to excavate sand at quarry in Kiyovu sand mimes.
During the excavation process at around 10:00 am, the sand quarry collapsed and fell on him thereby killing him instantly. 11 others of his group survived, some with injuries and were whisked to their country Rwanda.
A report of sand quarry collapse and death of a person has been reported to police by the Kiyovu village Local Counci One Chairperson, Kabagambe Robert, 36.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region said that the scene was visited by D/CID/O and the deceased body was taken to Kabale referral hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
He added that the a statement on death incident was registered at kabale central police station under file ref CRB 466/2022.
