The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has asked police and other authorities to expedite investigations and give a detailed report on the death of their supporter, Bewatte Betungura who was brutally killed during the Makerere University electoral guild campaigns on Thursday.
“We call upon the authorities to expedite a quick independent investigation on this matter and the culprit(s) are brought to book! we demand Justice for the young man!” Demands FDC
Yesterday, Bewatte Betungura, a law Student at Uganda Christian University Kampala Campus and strong member of the FDC had travelled to Makerere university to canvass support for his Mbarara High School Old Boy Mr Justus Tukamushaba, the FDC candidate for the 88th Makerere university Guild Presidential race.
According to the FDC, their supporter was stabbed to death in a scuffle that ensued when Tukamushaba Justus’s procession was blocked and denied access by the NUP supporters and leaders present, at the Muk Rugby Grounds for our final campaign rally.
In an eulogy statement, the FDC said that many of their supporters were wounded in the scuffle.
“The sad incident left many of our supporters and FDC -MUK Chapter leaders injured!” said FDC
The Najjanankumbi based political party condemned political hooliganism that led to this unprecedented act of a student killing a fellow student a time when Makerere University is celebrating her century.
“As Makerere University marks 100years of existence, it has been unprecedented for a student to kill a fellow student.!!! Over time, it has been the deep state with its coercive machinery that has been responsible for the killing, maiming, and injuring of students at the Ivory Tower. Such extremists must be condemned by right-thinking members of society,” FDC said ;
They advised institutions of learning to desist from insults and physical attacks in all their political activities to ensure sanity in students’ leadership
“We strongly condemn this political hooliganism that hoisted this violent tragic action, and as we advise other institutions, Politics should be a contestation of ideas, not a contestation of insults, and physical attacks!”
FDC mourned Betungura’s untimely death and demanded for fairness to his family.
“We convey heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, MUK Students, FDC-MUK chapter, FDC UCU Students Chapter, UCU Law Society Kampala campus, and friends of Mr Bewatte. Rest in perfect peace Bewatte and quick recovery to the injured people.”
Bewatte will be laid to rest tomorrow, at his ancestral burial site in Kamwenge District according to the FDC.
