The government will begin reviewing police officers’ terms of employment as part of a plan to improve the welfare of security forces countrywide.
Addressing a press conference at his Harambee House office in Nairobi on Monday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki noted that the employment terms of police officers have not been reviewed for nearly ten years despite the hardships their profession entails.
“Majority of our officers continue to serve this nation in difficult circumstances, many of them protect our people in risky circumstances and have lost their lives. I will defend and protect our officers who legally undertake their duties,” said Prof. Kindiki.
“Shortly the government will initiate a process of re-looking at the terms and conditions of our officers, nearly for ten years the terms of officers have not been reviewed. This review will include all officers,” the CS added.
Kindiki who was briefing on the state of security in the country also said the government is deploying a multi-agency response to get rid of criminals who have taken over the streets of Nairobi to terrorise members of the public.
This comes amid increased cases of criminal activities especially muggings within the city.
The CS announced a change in the leadership and command of the National Police Service in Nairobi, without giving further details.
“We have witnessed increasing criminal activity within Nairobi. Small group of criminals armed with knives and other weapons is terrorizing the citizens of this city as well as other urban centres. Those boys who have dared the government and want to tell us that they can take over the city and make it a city of crime. We have also heard you and therefore we are coming after you effective immediately,” said Kindiki.
“We have taken measures already in regard to counter-terrorism, and respose to bandits and banditry. In this regard, the leadership and command of the police has changed the command of Nairobi city police deployment effective immediately.”
He assured Kenyans of their safety and noted that while the country continues to face significant security challenges, the government remains aware of terror threats and continues to be on high alert.
