KAMPALA
The Igara East member of parliament, Micheal Mawanda Maranga is detained at Natete police station after he was arrested for alleged corruption.
Mawanda (NRM, Igara East Constituency) is being accused of causing financial mismanagement and war loss compensation funds paid to cooperatives.
He was arrested earlier this day (June 19) in Nansana by security operatives who whisked him to Natete police for questioning as police investigate the management of Shs164 billion for compensation of cooperative societies that lost funds and property in wars between 1979 and 2006.
The arrest comes at a time when three NRM MPs namely Cissy Namujju Dionozia (Lwengo district Woman MP), Yusuf Mutembuli are on remand on charges of corruption in budget racket while their counter part, Paul Akamba (Busiki county) his whereabouts remain unknown after he was arrested by security outside court last week.
Sources at parliament say many MPs both from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the opposition are not at ease after the alleged list of 35 MPs summoned to CID Kibuli to answer questions related to corruption at parliament leaked on social media.
Sources say many legislators no longer attend meetings and are never in their offices at parliament, Kingdom Kampala for the fear of being arrested by police.
It should be recalled that this is not the first time Hon. Mawanda is imprisoned on corruption related charges. In 2013, he was arrested in Mumbai India together with the former regional cooperations minister, Isaac Musumba and a Kampala businessman, Yakuba Mathai after they attempted to extort 20 million US dollars from four electronic company directors of Video Com.
Mawanda, a blue eyed boy to Museveni’s son and the nation’s CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has amassed too much unscrupulous wealth and owns a number of “investments” in Uganda and abroad. He will spend his night today at the Natete and he is expected to be arraigned to court tomorrow.
