The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat has denied association with Ms. Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha, a woman in a viral video assaulting a Traffic police officer. In a statement which was seen by Parrots Media, the NRM stated that Bashisha has never worked with them in any capacity.
On Friday, Bashisha who was driving in a white Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number UBM 439T, was signaled by the officer to pull over on allegations she had caused an accident. However, she reportedly ignored the officer’s signals and continued driving with a hand-held phone promoting the officer to pursue her upto Lugogo Traffic Lights where she parked her vehicle at UMA grounds and locked herself inside.
When the officer asked for a driving permit, Bashisha turned rowdy, assaulted and confiscated the officer’s Electronic Police Service (EPS) gadget and two mobile phones.
Bashisha was on Monday (October 21) arraigned before Nakawa Magistrate Court which remanded her to custody on multiple charges, including assault, attempted simple robbery of an EPS machine, failure to comply with police directives, careless driving, and driving with expired insurance. She will return to court on November 4.
Various reports circulated by several Media outlets indicated Bashisha falsely alleged she holds a public relations role within the NRM at their Secretariat, a claim which the party has denied.
“We urge the public to disregard these misleading articles and call on the media to verify information before publication,” the Secretariat stated in an official release.
Meanwhile, the NRM threatened legal actions against Bashisha over alleged impersonation .
“Our legal team is currently working with the police, and a formal complaint will be filed regarding the case of impersonation,” read a statement by NRM.
