The Democratic Party (DP) has officially initiated steps to terminate its cooperation agreement with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), bringing to an end of nearly three years working corporation.

The decision follow a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Soroti that proposed for a one month self-evaluation assessment on the side of DP regarding the agreement before a termination process is initiated.

In a formal letter dated April 7, 2025, addressed to the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Nobert Mao, DP’s National Vice President Dr. Fred Mukasa Mbidde outlined a roadmap for the termination process.

DP Secretary General Gerald Siranda Blacks and Party President Nobert Mao.

Mbidde expressed gratitude for the successful deliberations and cites a “comprehensive self-evaluation” as the basis for the party’s move.

“This motion is set to formally commence today… following the conclusion of the one-month assessment period,” Mbidde wrote, referring to an earlier evaluation process triggered by Mao’s alternative motion.

Among the proposed steps is the issuance of a formal notice to the NRM, the launch of nationwide consultative meetings and termination rallies, and the establishment of a National Organizing Network to steer the transition campaign. The DP also plans to roll out a national and international outreach strategy to communicate the initiative broadly.

Additionally, Mbidde emphasized the importance of unity and internal communication throughout the transition process and praised Mao’s leadership.

“I eagerly anticipate collaborating closely with you and our party as we embark on this significant journey together,” he stated.

The cooperation agreement has long faced criticism from within the Democratic Party, with many members accusing Party President Nobert Mao and Secretary General Gerald Siranda of prioritizing personal gains over party interests. Detractors argued that the arrangement primarily served to secure lucrative government positions rather than advance the DP’s political agenda.

According to resolutions made during the Soroti meeting, the termination of the agreement will result in Nobert Mao relinquishing his ministerial position, as part of the agreed terms.

Democratic Party President Nobert Mao recently defended the cooperation agreement, claiming that some party members are targeting him personally and spreading misinformation about its purpose and benefits. It remains unclear whether he will support or accept the decision to terminate the agreement.
