A Catholic priest attached to Gulu Archdiocese collapsed and died on Friday while at Christ the King Parish in Kitgum District, the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) confirmed.
Rev. Fr Mathew Okun Lagoro was rushed to Kitgum General Hospital after collapsing at the parish premises, but medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
“It is with deep sadness that the Archdiocese of Gulu announces the passing of Rev. Fr Mathew Okun Lagoro. He tragically collapsed earlier today at Christ the King Kitgum and was confirmed dead at Kitgum General Hospital,” a statement from UEC read in part.
Diocesan officials said the priest’s body was transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor mortuary in Gulu City.
Fr Lagoro previously served as Chairman of the Uganda National Diocesan Priests’ Association (UNDIPA) and was widely respected for his commitment to pastoral service.
“The loss is profoundly felt by all who knew him,” the Archdiocese stated.
By press time, funeral arrangements were yet to be announced.
