Ntare School Student has been found dead in River Rwizi in suspected suicide by drowning, just days after he was suspended from school.
Elvis Magambo, 19, Senior Five student at Ntare School, had been missing for over a week after reportedly being suspended from school. He was last seen on July 2, 2025, and a missing person’s report was filed at Koranorya Police Station shortly after.
His lifeless body was later found floating in the river in the early hours of July 10, by the local residents who notified police at CPS Mbarara.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, SP Samson Kasasira, confirmed the identity of the deceased and said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of death. “We are investigating all possible leads, including foul play or accidental drowning. The public should allow police to do their work and avoid spreading unverified information,” Kasasira said.
As of Friday, Ntare School had not issued a public statement regarding the circumstances that led to Magambo’s suspension or disappearance.
The deceased was the son of Dr. Magambo Emmanuel, a dental surgeon at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, who is now mourning the untimely loss of his son.
This incident adds to a growing number of deaths reported along River Rwizi, prompting renewed calls from local leaders and residents for stricter safety measures.
Local residents have called on the government to erect protective barriers, put up warning signs, and introducing water safety awareness campaigns in schools and communities around the river.
Meanwhile, Magambo’s body was taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination as the investigation continues.
