MUBENDE

The National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Kasambya County parliamentary seat, Peter Kyagela, has been remanded to Kaweeri Prison after appearing before court on charges of forgery and uttering false documents during the ongoing nomination exercise.

Kyagela, 36, a resident of Bubanda Village in Mubende District, was arrested on October 23, 2025, at around 4 p.m., after allegedly presenting a forged Shs3 million bank payment receipt purportedly in the name of his political rival, Daudi Kabanda, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for the same seat.

According to police, the forged receipt was presented at the Electoral Commission (EC) offices in Mubende as proof of payment for nomination fees. However, EC officials reportedly discovered that the receipt number had already been issued to Kabanda.

Peter Kyagela, NUP Candidate for Kasambya county who was arrested over forgery.

He was first detained at Mubende Central Police Station to assist with investigations, and produced to court on Friday.

“Our investigations so far indicate that the suspect knowingly presented a falsified payment receipt to the Electoral Commission during his nomination process,” said SP Racheal Kawala, Wamala Region Police Spokesperson.

“The exhibit has been recovered and attached as evidence as inquiries continue.”

Kyagela, who appeared before the Mubende Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday, denied the charges. He was remanded to Kaweeri Prison until November 13, 2025, when he is expected to return to court for further mention of the case.

In other related news, in Mitooma District, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Ruhinda North County, Osbert Kato, was on Friday denied nomination after failing to present some the required documents to the Electoral Commission.

Kato’s nomination could not proceed because he did not meet certain mandatory requirements under the Parliamentary Elections Act.

However, unconfirmed reports circulating in the area suggest that Kato may have been persuaded or financially influenced to withdraw from the race, a move that cleared the way for Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who was later declared unopposed for the Ruhinda North seat. Efforts to get a comment from Kato were futile by press time.
