The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) is keeping its cards close to its chest regarding the endorsement of the speaker of the 12th parliament.

During the party weekly press conference at party headquarters in kampala, the Party PresidentHon Jimmy Akena clarified that UPC hasn’t endorsed any candidate, despite some party members backing the current speaker Annet Anita Among.

Akena says the members who endorsed Speaker Among are doing it on their own accord, maintaining that the party will at an appropriate come out to declare a candidate of their choice.

“We have not endorsed the current Speaker. So whoever is speaking, that one is speaking on their own terms. We will pronounce ourselves,” he said.

Akena stressed that the current situation in the country Ugandans needs a speaker who can stand with people and amplify their voices.

“Uganda needs a Parliament with a Speaker who understands the role and the importance of a Speaker of Parliament,” Akena said. “Many Members of Parliament and leaders in Parliament who are there as self-seekers, out to grunt for themselves, with no concern about the citizens who are suffering day and night.”

At least five candidates have already thrown their hats in the ring to contest for the speaker of the 12th parliament . They include the incumbent Annet Anita Among (NRM), Minister of justice and constitutional affairs Norbert Moa (DP), Hon Lydia Wanyoto Mutende (NRM), the Mbale City Woman MP-elect, Aringa South MP Alioni Yorke Odria and State Minister for Lands and Urban Development, Princess Persis Namuganza (Independent – NRM Leaning).

More candidates are expected to express their interest meanwhile, as the country gears up for the speaker elections after the swearing-in of the new government in May this year.
