Police in Bushenyi district are hunting for a bus driver who fled the scene after a head-on collision that left two people injured.
The accident occurred at Peak Hotel, near the former Banyankore Kweterana factory area, along the Ishaka–Mbarara Highway on Friday morning. The accident involved Global Bus, registration number UBE 159N, and an Isuzu Tipper Reg No UBK 390M.
Preliminary findings indicated that the driver of the bus was attempting to overtake three other vehicles when he collided head-on with tipper motor vehicles.
The Regional Police Public Relations Officer, SP Apollo Tayebwa said two people were injured, and no fatalities were recorded.
“The tipper had three occupants at the time of the accident. The driver and a turnman sustained injuries and were rushed to KIU hospital for treatment, while a third occupant escaped unhurt,” Tayebwa explained.
He added that the driver of the bus fled the scene immediately after causing the accident, stating that efforts to apprehend him to assist with investigations are ongoing.
Police attributed the crash to reckless driving and overspeeding, based on eyewitness accounts.
“We strongly condemn acts of reckless driving. Preliminary information suggests the bus driver was overspeeding at the time of the crash,” Tayebwa said.
Police urged all road users to exercise caution, warning that negligence by one individual can lead to serious consequences for others. Meanwhile, investigations into the incident are ongoing.
