The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has pre-qualified 650 suppliers to provide goods and services for the continental tournament.
The development was announced by the chairperson of the LOC Communications Subcommittee, Dr Dennis Mugimba, during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Wednesday.
Mugimba said 850 potential suppliers had so far registered with the LOC, with 650 already pre-qualified while the rest are undergoing various levels of review.
“As of today, 850 potential suppliers have registered with us, of which 650 have already been pre-qualified and the rest are undergoing various levels of review,” he said.
He urged more businesses to register for prequalification and participate in LOC tenders, saying the process presents an opportunity for local companies to supply goods and services during AFCON 2027.
Mugimba also encouraged Ugandan businesses to participate in tenders advertised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which he said are intended to promote local content while maintaining the standards associated with the AFCON brand.
He said the Government had fully released Shs135.7 billion required for the development of nine additional training facilities.
The facilities include Hoima Booma (Shs13.3b), Masindi King George Stadium (Shs20.2b), Sir Tito Winyi SS (Shs18.6b), Pece Memorial Stadium (Shs13.3b), Gulu University (Shs13.3b), Lira University (Shs13.3b), FUFA Kadiba (Shs5.2b), Makerere University (Shs21.9b) and Kyambogo University (Shs16.5b).
Mugimba said significant progress had also been made on the remodelling of Mandela National Stadium (MNS), with works expected to be completed by December 31, 2026.
