A police marine boat on a rescue mission has capsized in Lake Victoria few days after another boat capsized and killed over 20 people.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson says the boat capsized when police marine rescue team were returning to the lake shore from a mission to recover missing persons who had drowned earlier this week.
According to Owoyesigyire, all the five occupants of the boat have been rescued alive.
“We are relieved to report that all five Marine officers who were onboard the capsized boat have been rescued alive,” he said
Owoyesigyire noted that the boat capsized due to strong winds on the lake. He said the team had successfully retrieved one body of the missing persons before an incident
The KMP mouthpiece added that investigation into the accident and efforts to recover bodies of the missing persons are still on.
“Marine Police department remains committed to upholding safety protocols and measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. We will continue to collaborate with relevant authorities and stakeholders to enhance safety and rescue operations on Lake Victoria,” ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said
