The Church of Uganda has elected Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko as the 7th Bishop of West Buganda Diocese.
His election was announced today, February 16, 2025, during a House of Bishops meeting at Acaki Hotel in Kitgum Diocese.
Rev. Canon William Ongeng, the CoU Provincial Secretary said Rev. Canon Nsereko will be consecrated and enthroned on March 30, 2025, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, in Masaka District. He replaces Bishop Henry Katumba Tamale who is set to retire on March 28, after reaching the mandatory age of 65.
Born on July 5, 1965, in Bbira Naakuwadde, Wakiso District, Rev. Canon Nsereko has served in various capacities within the Church of Uganda. He was ordained a deacon in 1989 and became a priest in 1990 at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Namukozi, Mityana Diocese. In 2010, he was elevated to the rank of Canon at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako.
Currently, Rev. Canon Nsereko serves as the Archdeacon of Kakoma Archdeaconry and Vicar of St. John’s Kakoma Church of Uganda. His past roles include serving as Provost of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, and Archdeacon of Masaka.
He holds a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University and a Diploma in Primary Education from the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo.
Rev. Canon Nsereko is married to Mrs. Sarah Nsereko, and they are blessed with three children.
