A massive fire has engulfed the Nyumba Kubwa building in Arua Park, located in the heart of Kampala City.
The blaze, which started around 10 a.m., has yet to have its exact cause determined. However, preliminary reports suggest it may have originated from a charcoal stove used by a black tea vendor on the first floor before spreading rapidly to other sections of the building.
Eyewitnesses report that some traders remain trapped inside their shops, while others are on the rooftop of the building, adding to the urgency of rescue efforts.
Alarmingly, the building’s rooftop, which serves as a parking lot, reportedly holds approximately 200 vehicles which according to traders operating in the park heightens concerns over potential property loss.
Police fire brigade and rescue teams have responded to the emergency, and are working tirelessly to contain the flames and evacuate those at risk. Efforts to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of occupants are ongoing.
Further updates on the situation, including potential casualties and the extent of the damage follow in our subsequent reports.
