The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended the campaign period for candidates contesting in the Kikuube District LCV chairperson by-election.
In a notice issued by EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the commission said campaigns will now end on June 16, 2026.
The extension follows an earlier adjustment of the polling date from June 10 to June 18, 2026.
EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the change was made to comply with electoral laws, which require campaigns to end 24 hours before polling day.
“As required by the law, campaigns stop 24 hours before polling. When this is factored into the revised polling date, the campaign period will end on June 16, 2026,” Mucunguzi said.
Last month, the commission nominated two candidates to contest in the by-election, which was occasioned by the death of former district chairperson Peter Banura Kyaligonza in a road crash in April.
The candidates are Phenekansi Timanyire of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Paddy Kisembo of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
According to the revised roadmap, campaigns will run until June 16, while polling will take place on June 18.
The commission urged all stakeholders to take note of the changes and called on candidates, supporters and agents to adhere to electoral laws and guidelines.
EC also appealed to the candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns to enable voters in Kikuube District to elect their chairperson in a peaceful and orderly environment.
