Equity Bank Uganda on Wednesday (August 7) contributed shillings 10 million towards Watoto church’s Golf Tournament.

Announcing the contribution at Uganda Golf Club Kitante, Anthony Kituuka, the bank’s Managing Director highlighted the significance of the contribution in demonstrating the bank’s commitment to transforming lives, restoring dignity, and creating wealth opportunities. He noted that the initiative aligns with the bank’s vision to champion social and economic prosperity for the people of Africa.

‘’Champion means to find a cause, find people who are aligned in terms of value or objective, and work with them to achieve that cause. We are delighted to partner with Watoto Church Uganda in this fantastic initiative and honestly believe in the power of education and empowerment,’’ said Kituuka.

The Watoto Golf tournament is part of the church’s 40th Anniversary celebrations and seeks to raise resources to upskill learners at Hope Vocational and Technical Institute, funded by Watoto Church.

The church anticipates raising approximately Shillings 300 million through the tournament, with proceeds designated to equip Hope Vocational Institute with essential tools and resources. This investment will enhance the learning experience for up to 1,400 students, providing them with vital vocational training skills.

Speaking to journalists shortly after receiving the dummy cheque from the bank Managing Director, Pastor Edward Mwesigye, the Pastoral Team Leader at Watoto, hailed Equity Bank for supporting Golf tournament and  Watoto Church development activities. Mwesigye emphasized that Hope Vocational and Technical Institute, a flagship initiative of Watoto Church, is dedicated to nurturing a generation of skilled and productive Ugandan citizens. By providing top-notch vocational training, he said the institute seeks to empower young people to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.

‘’We want great plumbers, electricians, engineers, and mechanics who are going to contribute to the economy of Uganda, and this tournament is one of the initiatives aimed at raising money to resource our school, as we need lots of modern equipment, teachers, and supervisors to enable us to equip our young people with the knowledge’’, he said.

This year’s Watoto Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday 10th July, 2024 at the Uganda Golf Club. The tournament focuses on young adults, and the subsequent editions will focus on young children or women that the organisation takes care of.

Kituuka disclosed Equity Bank’s commitment to continue supporting Golf and other sports activities in Uganda, and appealed to the public to join golfers in supporting Watoto golf tournament on Saturday.

‘’In terms of golf, Equity Bank has been in the golf world for quite some time, as we are known for various tournaments, especially the Longe Open. We look forward to a fantastic Saturday and therefore urge even the non-golfers or aspiring golfers to come and join those of us who play golf this weekend’’, Kituuka appealed.

The government of Uganda recognises Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as an essential contributor to the prosperity of individuals and sustained economic growth and development of the country. By prioritizing TVET, Watoto aims to equip Ugandan citizens with practical skills, enhance productivity, and propel the country towards economic prosperity
