Religious and political leaders in Kabale District have expressed grave concern regarding the rising number of murder cases within the Kigezi region, particularly those stemming from domestic violence and theft.
These concerns have intensified in the wake of recent criminal incidents in the region. One tragic case involves the murder of an unidentified male adult which occured on August 26, 2023, around 4:00 PM in Rutenga Ward, Central Division, Kabale Municipality in Kabale district. Another distressing incident revolves around the demise of Scovia Kobusingye, a resident of Karengyere Trading Center in Karengyere Parish, Muko Sub County, Rubanda District. Kobusingye tragically lost her life when her husband struck her fatally with a stool during a domestic violence altercation last week.
Reflecting on these distressing events, the Archdeacon of Kamuronko Church of Uganda Archdeaconry, Ven. Bens Aharimpitsya said the criminals instead of channeling their energy into constructive endeavors, they are resorting to violence, targeting hardworking individuals to unlawfully seize their belongings.
“It’s disheartening to witness a trend where individuals are forsaking productive pursuits and opting to harm those who toil diligently. This wave of violence not only claims lives but also deprives families of their rightful possessions.”
Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba, the parliamentary representative for the people of Ndorwa East said these acts of murder as a result of domestic violence are staining the behavior of Christians.
On the numerous reports of theft of domestic animals and agricultural produce, Hon. Niwagaba emphasized the need for families to involve themselves in commercial farming using the available land, as a means to keep occupied and reduce criminality.
“It’s truly disheartening to witness Christians engaging in heinous acts like murder due to domestic conflicts. Furthermore, the theft of animals and crops exacerbates the situation. To counter this, families should actively participate in commercial farming as a constructive outlet for their energies.” he explained.
The LC3 Chairperson of Lyakarimira, Canon Enock Kazooba added his voice to the discourse attributing high crime rates in Kigezi region to the presence of animosity within the church community.
“Hatred has no place among members of the church. It’s deeply concerning to see such discord within a community that should stand as a beacon of unity and love.” Kazooba Said.
The leaders now want the police and other sister security agencies to mutually work with the local people to identify, crackdown criminals as well as creating awareness on community policing.
