Hon Kityo Babirye, Ex President of the Uganda Netball Federation continues to shed light on the issue of corruption within the country’s sports council. Babirye recently revealed that the Ugandan netball team has been unable to compete in any tournaments for over a year due to a lack of funds, which she attributes to corruption within the federation.
In a shocking revelation, Babirye highlighted the stark contrast between the budget allocated to the Uganda football team (17B) and the minimal funds given to the netball team (960 million), a large portion of which was reportedly embezzled by individuals at the National council for sports in the ministry of education.
Babirye has called on female leaders across all sectors to advocate for equal opportunities for women, emphasizing that the issue of corruption is not limited to just sports. Despite reports from the Auditor General and Inspector General of Government identifying those responsible for the mismanagement of funds, no action has been taken to rectify the situation.
Undeterred by the corruption plaguing the sports sector, Babirye has vowed to continue her support for young slortmen and women through her foundation, providing training facilities and advocating for change within the National council of sports leadership. She expressed disappointment in the current leaders of the NCS, stating that they do not have the best interests of sports at heart.
