Farmers in Sheema municipality were advised to adopt improved farming methods to tackle the challenges posed by the hot weather conditions in the region. The call came during a one-day agricultural conference at Sun Beach Hotel organized by East African Seeds Uganda.
Mr. Behangana Octavious, an agronomist from SYOVA SEEDS COMPANY LIMITED, emphasized the importance of implementing better farming techniques to enhance crop production quality. He urged farmers to remain steadfast in their crop rotation, cultivation, and harvesting practices, despite the adverse weather conditions.
Mr. Octavious highlighted the need for farmers to embrace irrigation methods, plant cover crops, and use drought-resistant crop varieties to mitigate the effects of the dry spells. He also discouraged the use of artificial fertilizers during hot weather and encouraged the planting of trees to maintain favorable climatic conditions.
Additionally, he recommended the cultivation of crops that are resistant to high temperatures, practicing agroforestry, and utilizing efficient irrigation systems like drip irrigation or watering cans. By following these suggestions, farmers can navigate the challenges brought about by the weather and achieve sustainable agricultural practices in Sheema municipality.
The conference aimed to equip farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the face of weather challenges and improve their overall crop production. Through practical advice and guidance, the event provided a platform for farmers to enhance their farming methods and ensure success in their agricultural endeavors despite the prevailing weather conditions.
