The Forum for Democratic Change party has accused the government of Uganda for hijacking to their idea to extend UShs 100,000 to each homestead in the country affected by COVID-19 pandemic.
This was disclosed by the party president Patrick Amuriat during a weekly press brief at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi Kampala.
It should be recalled that government last week launched a campaign to disburse UShs 10,2400 to vulnerable Ugandans in urban municipalities and cities whose incomes were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to support them in these 42 days lockdown. A total of 500,000 persons in various vulnerable categories were registered to benefit from this programme.
Amuriat however said the idea of giving Ugandans Shs100,000 as Covid relief was enshrined in their 2021 election manifesto.
According to him, the party had planned to extend this cash handouts to vulnerable Ugandans for a period of six months.
Amuriat wondered how government hijacked to their idea arguing that unlike the 500,000 beneficiaries targeted by the government, FDC had planned to give this assistance to 5 million Ugandans across the country.
He urges that the government increases the number of beneficiaries and also extends the period of payment.
