Court in Kampala has further remanded to Luzira thirty-six members of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) members from Katonga faction who were recently charged with terrorism.
The group was arrested from a hotel in Kisumu, Kenya, where they had gone to undergo a leadership training. However, Kenyan authorities reportedly became suspicious of their intentions and they were deported to Uganda where they were charged with terrorism.
On Tuesday, they returned to Nakawa magistrate court for a mention of their case but they were ordered to return to court via video conference on August 26.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the court session, Julius Sekadde, the accused persons lawyer expressed disatisfaction with the way court is handling this matter. He said that the accused persons were not present in court as they followed proceeding virtually.
“Today’s session has ended in disappointment on our end because all the accused persons were not brought in court. The proceeding happened via Zoom and the accused persons were based in their respective prisons where they were remanded to,” said Counsel Julius Sekadde.
He said the gesture of not producing their clients physically in court depicts the injustice in this matter and appealed to court to issue an order to Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) to produce all the suspects to court in the next hearing.
