A devastating fire broke out yesterday evening at the Ssentamu Building on High Street, leaving a popular restaurant in ruins and causing severe damage to the commercial property.
According to the Police Fire and Rescue Services department, the blaze erupted at approximately 4:43 p.m. and quickly spread through the restaurant owned by Ms. Nalukenge Fatuma. Firefighters responded promptly and managed to extinguish the flames before they could spread to neighboring businesses. Despite their efforts, the restaurant was completely destroyed, and the building itself sustained extensive structural damage.
The Rwizi Region police spokesperson SP Kasasira Samson confirmed that while no casualties were reported, the financial loss is significant. “The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but investigations are ongoing,” he said in a statement.
The incident has sparked concern among traders and residents along High Street, many of whom rely on the Ssentamu Building as a hub for business activity. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as forensic teams work to determine the origin of the fire.
This latest outbreak highlights the growing need for enhanced fire safety measures in Mbarara City’s commercial centers, where dense activity and aging infrastructure often increase the risk of such disasters.
