Freedom Electric Vehicle Ltd on Thursday launched its first commercial electric taxi vehicle in Uganda. This landmark event, held in Kampala, saw an impressive turnout and was featured a live display of one of their state-of-the-art electric taxi vehicles, drawing immense interest and enthusiasm from the attendees.

The managing director Freedom EV Mr. Ratan Tayal says that at Freedom Electric Vehicle, they are committed to providing sophisticated and environmental – friendly transport solutions that meet the needs of the modern world. According to him, their electricity taxis represent a significant step forward in this endeavor.
He adds that the launch of the electric taxis promises EV experience for Kampala travellers, cheap brand new cars with little maintenance costs, and a future of less pollution to the children.
“The electric taxi vehicles introduced are designed to address the environmental challenges posed by traditional petrol and diesel-powered cars, significantly reducing carbon emissions and pollution in the cities,” Ratan stated.
However, he also tasked the government to come up with initiatives like levying of taxes for importation of electric vehicles, subsidising the price of electricity, which would make the cost of the taxis and their maintenance cheaper than they already are.
Fredrick Makanga from Frleddration of taxi operators associations (UTOF) embraced this initiative, saying it will help to reduce transport costs since the vehicles do not use fuel. He adds that it will also eliminate air pollution across the country.
The managing director of Kalocen Investments Ltd the developers of Bwaise Transit Terminal where the first charging station for the Electric taxis will be set up before being rolled out to other terminals Col.Fred Boogere, expressed pleasure in being part of the efforts to make Kampala a Smart City. “We are glad to be partners this project that looks to incorporate the Smart City Agenda,”Boogere said.
The deputy mayor Kawempe division Badir Makumbi lauded the initiative, highlighting the potential of electric vehicles in transforming Uganda’s urban transport landscape.
Electric vehicles (EVs) present a cost-effective alternative to conventional vehicles. With lower maintenance costs and zero fuel expenses, the electric taxis promises substantial savings for drivers and operators.
Additionally, the integration of advanced battery technology ensures long-lasting and efficient performance, making electric taxis a viable solution for Uganda’s urban transportation needs. While secondhand taxis in Uganda cost about Shs 80 Million, brand new electric taxis will cost Shillings 120 million.
