Despite recent fire reports, business at the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID) banana industrial factory in Bushenyi district is showing resilience and determination by remaining open and operational.
A string of fires broke out at the banana complex and damaged a number of factory materials worth millions on Wednesday, September 4. The fire started from an unknown source at the park yard where they park materials the company and destroyed several items including irrigation materials, PVC water pipes, plumbing materials and iron sheets.
Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, Martial Tumusiime told reports that the source originated from inside because it was concentrated on one place. This caused concerns among banana farmers and residents. However, the Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner, Robert Atuhairwe said on Thursday (September 5) that the incident did not disrupt factory operations.
“I want to assure president Museveni, all Ugandans and well wishers of the banana industrial complex that normal operations continue at the factory,” said RDC Atuhairwe.
Atuhairwe said the inferno did not affect functional and residential facilities at the factory because it was immediately extinguished by the factory story and security guards.
As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fires, Atuhairwe noted that the security remain committed to providing security services at the complex.
“Nevertheless, as the District Security Committee [DSC], we are in touch with the management of Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development [PIBID/BIRDC] to further strengthen security and safety at the complex to avoid future occurrences,” he said.
