Former IGP Okoth Ogola Dies
Former Inspector General of Police, IGP Boniface Okoth Ogola has died, police announced.
According to the Uganda Police Force, Ogola passed on today, Friday, February 14, 2025, at Nakaseero hospital.
Ogola served as the IGP between 1981 and 1985, before fleeing to exile barely two months before the National Resistance Army (NRA) rebels led by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni seized power by overthrowing then, Obote II’s government.

The current police Boss, IGP Abas Byakagaba, expressed his deep condolences to the family of the late Ogola and emphasized that the force will honor him in a manner befitting his legacy.
“The Uganda Police Force will remember Okoth Ogola’s leadership and significant contributions to the development of our institution. His work will continue to inspire,” said Byakagaba.
He leaves behind a mixed legacy. His tenure as IGP was marked by both progress and challenges during a time of political unrest.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson said Ogola’s death is a great loss to Tororo region and Ugand in particular.
“The people of Tororo are mourning the loss of Boniface Eron Okoth Ogola, a renowned figure who served as Inspector General of Police during Obote II’s regime. Unfortunately, he passed away this morning at Nakasero Hospital. Ogola’s legacy extends beyond his tenure as IGP, as he also played a significant role in Uganda’s history, including serving as personal assistant to Erinayo Oryema, another former IGP,” said Onyango.
The police force has assured the public that updates on the funeral arrangements will be provided in due course.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
