Three former Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials have been charged with manslaughter in Kasangati Magistrate’s Court over alleged negligence in Kiteezi landfill tragedy.
The three sacked officials including former Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, her Deputy Eng. Edward Luyimbazi, and Director of Public Health Dr. Daniel Okello were arraigned before the Kasangati Magistrates Court on Friday.
The trio also face charges of causing death by a rash and negligent act stemming from alleged failures to address safety concerns at the Kiteezi landfill collapse which claimed 35 lives.
It is alleged that the trio continued operations at Kiteezi landfill without proper permits, ignoring warnings of an imminent disaster, allowing further waste dumping, failing to alert nearby residents of the dangers, and neglecting to decommission the site.
The prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Lillian Omara, asserts that Kisaka, Luyimbazi, and Okello committed these offenses between July 2020 and August 10, 2024, in Kampala and Lusanja, Kiteezi.
They however denied the charges against them.
